Teaching Music History Conference 2022

10-11 June 2022, hosted by the UMKC Conservatory at the University of Missouri – Kansas City in Kansas City, MO and accessible via livestream.

The UMKC Conservatory is excited to welcome you to Kansas City this summer for the 2022 Teaching Music History Conference. Featuring a special session hosted by Beyond Tokenism, the Teaching Music History Conference promises be a site for the exploration of issues related to teaching music history at any academic level and for the discovery of new and more inclusive pedagogical methods.

Registration

Register through the UMKC Conservatory by June 3 (early bird discount by May 6)

  1. Standard tuition rate – $60 ($50 if registered by May 6)
  2. Student/Retired/Contingent faculty tuition rate – $45 ($35 if registered by May 6)

Local Arrangements

The 2022 Teaching Music History Conference will take place June 10-11 (Friday – Saturday) at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. All conference-related activities, including all sessions and breaks, will take place in the Miller Nichols Learning Center, Room 452, at 800 E. 51st St, Kansas City, MO 64110. The conference will also be livestreamed for registrants who cannot attend in-person.

Lodging

On-Campus Housing: Participants can stay in campus housing, either in a single room, which shares a bathroom with the adjoining room, or in a four-bedroom suite, with a shared bathroom. Linens are included. Cost is $55 per night, with the option of staying Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights for a total of $165.

Off-Campus Housing: We have arranged for a conference rate at the Hampton Inn and Suites Kansas City – Country Club Plaza, 4600 Summit St, Kansas City, MO 64112. When making a reservation, use this link for a discounted rate.

Wireless Access

Wireless access is available on the UMKC campus through the UMKCWPA network. Usernames and passwords will be available daily at the conference site.

Transportation

By Plane: All major airlines serve the metropolitan area at the Kansas City International Airport (MCI).

Parking: There is no free parking on the UMKC campus. For anyone requiring parking accommodations, campus parking passes will be available for $25. There is also metered parking available on campus. Parking is available adjacent to the conference location in the open lot north of the Miller Nichols Library & Learning Center. You can find a parking map here.

Dining

Dining is available on campus at the Student Union and the Atterbury Student Success Center. Also close to campus is the Country Club Plaza shopping district and several locally owned restaurants. More information about the dining options on campus and in the area can be found here.

We are also planning a conference dinner for Friday night, June 10 at Bo Lings Chinese Restaurant in the Country Club Plaza. You can register for the dinner with your conference registration for $45 and includes soup, appetizer, entrée, dessert, and beverage.

Symposiums

Starting the Sunday after TMHC, the UMKC Conservatory is hosting two symposiums on wind band and orchestral conducting. We invite you to stay and audit those events.
