CFP: Teaching Music History Conference 2026

The American Musicological Society Pedagogy Study Group invites proposals for the 2026 Teaching Music History Conference, to take place at New York University in New York City on 5–7 June 2026. Proposals must be submitted by  2 February 2026 at 11:59 P.M. ET, using this form.

This year we are particularly interested in children’s music. Music often starts with the young! We welcome interdisciplinary topics on music pedagogy and other perspectives related to childhood and youth studies. Our goal is to showcase the multitude of viewpoints exploring this rich subject and extend gratitude to those who inspired our musical journeys.

Possible subjects include but are not limited to:

  • Historical and cultural perspectives on children’s music and education
  • Pedagogical practices for teaching music history to K-12 students
  • Incorporating children’s media and material cultures in the classroom
  • Intersection of childhood and disability studies in teaching practices

As always, we also welcome any topic related to music history and musicology pedagogy (in any setting), including but not limited to:

  • Innovative approaches beyond traditional lectures
  • Creative assignments and projects
  • Inclusive practices in the classroom and beyond
  • Interdisciplinary approaches
  • Community outreach and public musicology
  • Teaching outside your native country and comfort zone
  • AND MORE!

Presentation formats include:

  • Individual Paper (20 min) – 250-word proposal
  • Lightning Talk (5 min) – 150-word proposal
  • Teaching Demonstration (20 min) – 250-word proposal
  • Panel, Roundtable, or Workshop (30 or 60 min) – 500-word proposal [rationale for the session as a whole and brief descriptions of individual presentations if applicable]

(The Pedagogy Study Group encourages panel organizers to bring together panelists with a range of backgrounds, experiences, affiliations, and perspectives)

Presenters should plan to deliver their work in person at the conference. However, a limited number of slots for virtual presentations will be available.
